Brandon receives his gold card
Huge congratulations to SJD apprentice, Brandon Hussain, who has just qualified as a fully-fledged electrician.
Senior contracts manager Richard Harrison awarded 22-year-old Brandon his Gold Card proving he has completed his training and assessment of competence and has the practical skills, technical knowledge and professional behaviours required to safely work unsupervised on construction and commercial sites.
Brandon didn’t have the easiest of starts having left school at the age of 15 during the pandemic. He signed up to do his electrical installation level 2 diploma at Milton Keynes College but had to start the course online with just two lessons a week and then only allowed to go into college for a half day of practical work each week for a year.
To become qualified to the industry recognised standard, Brandon has had to complete a Level 3 qualification, supported by a portfolio of work-based evidence and be assessed in the workplace before being allowed to take his AM2 exam. The exam involves a multiple-choice and practical tests including installation of containment and wires, testing and fault finding.
Brandon said: “Once you know the basics, the rest is mostly common sense, but the hardest part of the tests was the fault finding because you’re working under time pressure. I’m pleased to say that it’s all gone according to plan. As for the future, I’m just going to see where my qualification now takes me.”

It’s essential for the future of our sector and it’s been a pleasure to watch Brandon growing in confidence and acquiring all the necessary skills and experience to have a rewarding career.”
Brandon is currently working at Shipston High School in Warwickshire where he is part of the SJD team installing power, lighting and a fire safety system for a new gym and changing facilities.
