Electrical apprentice awarded his first set of tools

Any electrician will know the importance of good quality tools, and for a young apprentice the cost of their basic equipment can be prohibitive.

Luckly for 18-year-old Charlie Moffat, SJD’s newest apprentice, Nick King of wholesaler, Wharfside Electrical was on hand to present him with his first kit.

Provided by Fegime, Wharfside’s buying group, Nick explains that the kits are funded by the Fegime’s suppliers: “They provide apprentices with around £500 of good quality equipment including items like screwdrivers and testers, which, if looked after, will last a lifetime. It’s a pleasure to send Charlie off at the start of his career with everything he needs.”

Charlie has completed a T level in electrical installation within construction services at Milton Keynes College and was struggling to find an apprenticeship, but the college was so impressed with his practical work they said they would help him to find his first position and connected him with SJD.

“I’ve been really enjoying the banter on site and surprised to learn some things that they didn’t cover at College,” says Charlie.  “For instance, the course is really aimed at domestic work, however, at SJD I’ve been working on commercial projects where we use a variety of cable sizes that I haven’t come across before. I’m also learning about the regulations for commercial installations. It’s been a real eyeopener.

“My mentor is Michael, and he’s been teaching me that I’ve got to ask if there’s anything I’m unsure about.”

Charlie’s already experienced a variety of projects in his first few weeks with SJD. He’s been working on boilers at Cranfield University, replacing switches for machinery at NiftyLift and helping to refurbish some new school kitchens.

Charlie is taking his driving test soon which will make a huge difference to his independence and allow him to get to work under his own steam.

Good luck Charlie, it’s great to have you on board!
