Kings Oak Hospital, Circle Healthcare
Working again with Parias Construction & Interiors, SJD was asked to provide an electrical upgrade at King’s Oak Hospital’s imaging department.
Located in Enfield, North London, the hospital is part of Circle Health Group and wanted to improve its mammography facilities. Early intrusive surveys played a critical role in achieving a practical, low-impact design solution.
Undertaking detailed surveys during the design stage allowed SJD and Parias to fully understand the existing infrastructure and, importantly, the operational constraints of a live healthcare environment. This enabled the team not only to develop a robust electrical design, but also to minimise disruption to day-to-day hospital services.
Senior contracts manager, Richard Harrison explained that a key outcome of these surveys was the identification of a redundant X-ray supply: “SJD used an existing supply to provide a standalone TP-N distribution board. This approach allowed us to isolate the upgrade area independently from existing circuits, limiting downtime to only a few hours while enabling installation of entirely new power and lighting systems for the department.”
SJD delivered the full lighting design, Earth Bonding Bar (EBB) calculations, and testing and verification of an additional X-ray supply to ensure compliance with the imaging equipment manufacturers. Detailed coordination meetings took place with manufacturers Fuji and GE ensuring that each imaging system’s differing electrical and safety requirements were correctly incorporated into the final design.
Richard added: “It was great to see two of SJD’s apprentices involved in this project. One undertook installation of the new Triple Pole and Neutral (TPN) distribution board, while the other installed the Power Distribution Board (PDB) for the X-ray equipment in accordance with detailed schematics. Both gained valuable experience in EBB testing using low-ohm measurement equipment to confirm compliance with HTM requirements, along with producing individual test certification.”
While on site, the project expanded to include further significant upgrades to imaging facilities at the hospital, including:
- Replacement DXR and Mammography systems
- New reporting and office spaces
- Refurbished ultrasound rooms
- A new fully accessible WC
